Kitchen Cut-Out Handles

Right from the outset I decided against handleless doors for our kitchen joinery - you know the ones that have recessed grooves in each door/drawer that you grip to open? Yes they do offer a strong visual aesthetic and are popular for a smooth, sleek finish but when you spend as much time as I do in the kitchen, by the end of the day you begin to feel like arthritis has set into each and every one of your fingertips.

As our kitchen is rather large (at over 6 metres in length) and will include a considerable amount of cupboards and drawers, I was looking at these simple cut-out handles. They look good and I suspect will result in a considerable cost saving when you consider how expensive good quality hardware costs.

Has anyone got any comments on these type of handles and what are the pros and cons? I've been doodling around with some kitchen designs and having a good, hard think about the style and finishes, etc. Oh my gosh -  wait and see what I've come up with now!

  1. They are very cool...I just wonder about the bug factor especially if you don't have screens like us....If we have all our windows open those pesky moths and other flying things are just looking for a home. Our fancy light fittings are first port of call though and it was something I didn't consider when we installed them! xx

    1. Good point, I didn't think of that! There are definitely a lot more critters up here in QLD. A few years back a snake tried to slither through the plantation shutters in my bedroom one night (which was located upstairs.) Luckily I heard it, otherwise it would have climbed into bed with me. ewww! Must look into this a little further... xx

  2. I love that look.
    Simple.
And it will be easy to clean...another bonus!
I wouldn't worry too much about bugs...I figure if they want to get into your cupboards, they will find a way to get in there!

We started demolition on our back verandah today.
It had been enclosed but we are going to turn it back into a little deck.
And then next up is a kitchen renovation.
So I can't wait to see what you have come up with!

  3. Yes, can't wait to see what you come up with. As kitchens are such personal spaces, most people really research the choices out there because it is one of those things you don't want to have any regrets. I can't wait to see your design and finishes. Also, I think I would die if I found a snake slithering into my house. It is my very worst nightmare come true! Have a lovely weekend...

  4. I just love the look of cut out handles and one day when we do our kitchen... I have also considered the bug factor and maybe wouldn't use them on the pantry. Love the ideas you are coming up with.

  5. These look great, at my place I am sure Liongirl would be using them as letter boxes and would be leaving me all sorts of letters and parcels! Mel x

  6. Caroline I can hardly believe what a gem you are! I spent time on hols pouring over magazines thinking the exact same thing as you have said above re handleless kitchens and was going to start looking for some examples of this exact cut-out look. I do like it - I've got a friend who has a kitchen with these and will ask her opinion on them and will let you know. I just love your style!

  8. Vaya espectaculo de cocinas has puesto aquĆ. Con estas fotos me has dado algunas ideas para reformar mi cocina. La de colores verdes me ha encantado, aunque la que es toda de madera o estilo madera es preciosa, ya me hace dudar entre una y otra jejeje gracias por compartir.
