Bathroom Floor Tiles Rethink

I've always liked the colour "green" - in fact I could probably say that it's my favourite colour of all. When we first started thinking about floor tiles for the bathrooms, I was happy to go along with our architect's suggestion of a pisatchio green unglazed porcelain floor tile which was similar to one that they had used on a previous project. Our worker's cottage came from humble beginnings so I wanted the bathrooms in the house to pay homage to the fact, and not use any "flashy" tiles and fittings which would look out of place.

Here's what the tiles look like laid:

I like the way the floor tiles have been used as a skirting along the walls, and we are doing the same. However our floor tiles will be laid in a grid pattern instead:

We are also using white glazed ceramic wall tiles laid in a horizontal stretcher bond pattern (some refer to them as subway tiles) which I absolutely adore. There will also be a small section of the original VJ walls in the ensuite.

I recently came across this image (from Real Living Magazine) which got me thinking about about using a charcoal hexagonal tile on the floor instead:

I like these hex tiles - they create a bit of texture and visual interest on the floors. They too are a traditional floor tile so they would work nicely in an old house. Is it better to keep the bathroom relatively neutral and add colour with accessories? Do you think charcoal tiles are "dull"?

  2. Charcoal tiles aren't dull. I think they will look fabulous and classic! Also, I am biased as I put down charcoal tiles on my laundry floor. ;)

I do love the green too for a bit of colour, but grays and whites never date.

    Have fun deciding! x

  3. Now you know I love that shade of green (hence the kitchen pendants) so have always liked your original choice however for practicality of not showing up muddy footprints as well as probably looking good for years I have to say I love a good grey tile. When we save up to do the bathroom - probably years away- I plan to use a grey tile, but hey as long as you don't do white you'll be fine! mel x

  4. I like keeping bathrooms and kitchen neutral-they are so expensive-and adding in colour through accessories. I'm also biased against green because we have an awful coloured green bathroom-yours looks much nicer though. I love the white tiles!!!

  5. How about charcoal floors and pistachio towels?

Personally I love the green though. Considering it for our front door. We found the colour on our walls and wanted to keep a reference to the house's history. Our bathroom has pink and green Jap glass windows so green tiles were going to be way too much. White subway tiles for us and limestone on the floor.

  6. I am a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to tile choices as its one of those things that is very difficuly and costly to change if your taste changes! I have white subway tiles on my kitchen splashback and love them, mine are grouted white though my husband who is a tiler refused to grout them black! My bathroom which we have just started gutting, will be all white, really big wall tiles (cant remember the size) but am using the exact same hexagon tiles you have shown on my bath but in white. I am using the lights and the mirrors as my feature. Oh and my floor tiles are "latte" same as the rest of my house. Love that charcoal colour, but mosaics can be tricky as floor tiles, can get really grubby, if you do use them make sure your tiler uses epoxy grout. :)

  7. Love the hexagonal tiles, love the subway tiles. Love them! The only thing is the hexagonal tiles might be a bit hard to keep clean- extra grout and all that jazz? However I do love a neutral bathroom. Good luck with your decisions. x

  8. Personally I love the charcoal tiles you've selected, there is something soffisticated and textured with your second tile choice... Stick itch the subway on the walls, laid horizontal it elongates a large bathroom making it appear tall, vertical is great for small bathrooms where you want to stretch it out and make it appear larger... The charcoal and white is used in many Victorian period homes. I find this to be elegant and classy. A rule of thumb to Make your bathroom appear larger is always white tile, to the ceiling if you can afford it for the entire room... If you have a larger bathroom ou can use the extra long elongated subway tile laid vertically to truly gain height and stature, this can look truly superb :) hope this helps !!!

  15. I have a tile question for you!
We are tiling our bathroom...it breaks my heart to cover up the wood floor but we are building in underneath and so waterproofing and tiling is necessary.
I am struggling to choose a tile.
It is quite a big bathroom (about 3.5m x 3.5m) and so I am afraid a white hex would be too much but I really like those charcoal hex tiles. Have you sourced them? Are they marble? I have found a few marble hex tiles that I like but they all have been light in colour. If you did end up finding them...or have any tile advice...would you mind emailing me at caitlin.murphy@gmail.com. Thank you!
